Served as President of the United Nations General Assembly during its 24th session (1969 to 1970), the first African woman and second woman in history to hold that position, a milestone documented in UN General Assembly records. Prior to that appointment, served as Liberian Assistant Secretary of State and as a delegate to the United Nations from 1958 onward. Contributed to the legal frameworks underpinning Liberia's international ship registry, which became one of the world's two largest open registries by registered tonnage and a primary source of government revenue from the 1950s onward. Also participated in early international maritime law negotiations at the International Maritime Organization. She died in August 2007.
