Economic impact
Co-founded Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) in Lagos in 1990 and served as its inaugural Managing Director and Chief Executive until 2002. Under his tenure, GTBank pioneered several retail banking innovations in Nigeria, including fee-free student banking and a technology-led branch model. The bank listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1996; as of year-end 2023, the successor holding company (GTCO Plc) reported total assets of approximately ₦9.5 trillion, per GTCO's 2023 annual report. Founded the FATE Foundation in 2000; by 2024, the foundation had trained and provided structured mentorship to more than 100,000 Nigerian entrepreneurs through its business-development programmes, per FATE Foundation published records.
